Typical Conversation

Three things my parents never got when I lived in Taiwan:
1. I would always be 12 or 13 hours ahead of them (depending on daylight savings time)
2. We had cell phones in Asia
3. I lived in Taiwan, not Thailand

Mom: Where have you been? I've been calling and calling your apartment.
Me: Yeah, I was in Hong Kong for a conference. I told you... and you know I have a cell phone, right?
Dad: So, what time is it there?
Me: Still 12 hours ahead, so, 7pm.
Mom: So, it's dark there.
Me: Um, yeah.
Dad: Well, the sun just came up here.
Me: (sigh) Yep. Sounds about right.
Mom: You're finishing the day and we're just starting. (so pleased with herself for cracking the code)
Dad: You liking that Thai food?
Me: I love Thai food, but you know I'm in Taiwan, not Thailand...
Dad: Oh, right. Same thing.
Me: Okay then. I'll talk to you guys next week.
